Common Wrinkle Relaxer Myths

COMMON MYTHS

MYTH 1: Wrinkle relaxer injections are painful
The truth is that most people compare the sensation of the injections to a mosquito bite. No anesthetic is necessary during the procedure, as a very fine needle is used with a tiny amount of liquid injected.

At Cosmétique, we only use 0.3 ml syringes with the smallest needles to administer treatment. Further, we also offer ice packs and topical aesthetic for further relief. Our commitment towards pain free care means beauty IS NOT pain.

MYTH 2: Wrinkle relaxer treatment gives you a ‘fake’ look
Many people think that getting anti-wrinkle injections will cause you to lose the ability to have facial expressions. The truth of the matter is these procedures will enhance expressions rather than erase them completely. Those who have had the treatments performed by the highly-trained and skilled staff at Cosmétique are still able to display the entire range of facial expressions including frowning, smiling and appearing surprised. The treatment simply relaxes the muscle to give you a more youthful and refreshed look.

MYTH 3: Wrinkle relaxers are dangerous
With nearly 20 years of use for a range of different conditions, wrinkle relaxers have a long and well-established safety history. More than 16 million treatments have been performed since it was first introduced into medical care. No long-term side effects have ever been seen in users of the treatments, even in studies that followed people who received thirty or more injections over a period of 9 years. It’s so safe that it takes a dose 100 times larger than the cosmetic dose to see systemic effects. Wrinkle relaxers have been extremely popular throughout the years with more and more people using it to regain a younger look.

MYTH 4: The best time for wrinkle relaxers is when the lines appear
If you can get ahead of the game, it may help you in the long run. As Los Angeles Plastic Surgeon Grant Stevens explains, “Wrinkle relaxers are being used more and more frequently by people trying to do preventative treatments. Waiting until lines become etched into the skin means it’s much more difficult to smooth their appearance again.” He adds that wrinkle relaxers are often used for lines and wrinkles formed by muscle movements like scowling, squinting, and raising eyebrows. “Often by starting wrinkle relaxers preventatively, people and their muscles can actually learn to not make certain faces and expressions and contribute to worsening their lines. By not making certain expressions in the future, or making them less often, you may actually need less wrinkle relaxers or need it less often.”

MYTH 5: If you stop getting wrinkle relaxers, it will make your wrinkles worse
If you stop pursuing wrinkle relaxers, your wrinkles will just go back to the way they were before. Toronto Dermatologist Martie Gidon explains, “Wrinkle relaxers will prevent your wrinkles from worsening while you keep up with your treatments. If you decide to stop having wrinkle relaxer treatments, you will slowly lose the relaxing effects and will resume the normal development of wrinkles with movement. Wrinkle relaxers will not make wrinkles worse.” And remember, wrinkle relaxers’ results are not permanent. Los Angeles Plastic Surgeon Steven Svehlak says results typically last three to four months. “For those who get injected at regular intervals over time, however, the results can sometimes last a little bit longer, since the muscles have been immobilised for a long period and can atrophy. That said, once wrinkle relaxers are discontinued, they will slowly return to how they were initially, prior to treatment.”

MYTH 6: Wrinkle relaxers are something only women get
Hey, they don’t call it “Bro-tox” for nothing! Dr. Anthony Youn tells ABC News that “Every year it seems like more and more men are getting wrinkle relaxers as gifts, and it’s not necessarily the older men. At Cosmétique, we have seen a lot of men who are having wrinkle relaxer treatment as early as in their 30’s.” He added the average patient usually isn’t “the stereotypical guy who really, really cares about grooming and exactly how he looks.” And they’re not just seeing guys who were nudged by their lady friends, either. Some of those guys get wrinkle relaxers to find a lady friend! Dr. Constantino Mendieta says wrinkles can sometimes make men appear angry, not to mention older. Getting wrinkle relaxers can help “soften up this look to just give a more approachable appearance,” which can help men a great deal in business matters.
